Just a quick pop in today, lots of great things happened today. First up, our carpenter friends came by today to finishing putting back the laundry room floor. To make a long story short, we've been dealing with plywood sub floor since January after we discovered some leaks, rotten wood and termite damage. After having all the problems fixed, we were out of loot to put back the floor for a bit. BUT now, its back and its beautiful! I'm very excited to get the laundry room back together. Will have to take a picture, but its not really that exciting- its your standard vinyl flooring that we picked up at the Home Depot. (We decided against tile, as we are both to lazy to put in the time to keep it clean!) Secondly, my grandpa came over today to inspect my latest project and give us some advice. Since moving in I have wanted nothing more than to rid the stairs and second floor of the carpet and restore the hardwood floors. Well, last Sunday I started ripping up the carpet on the bottom stairs. And let me tell you, it was no easy feat! The carpet came up no problem, but then there was padding, tack boards, and about a million staples. Armed with a pry bar, hammer, and pliers, I went to town to reveal this-
I was pretty bummed, as the stairs underneath were totally trashed. And I mean trashed! Worn, beat, and broken. Literally! One stair was broken in half! I'm surprised that we hadn't put our foot through the entire thing! There was no amount of sanding that could bring these puppies back to life. So I dialed my grandpa up, a former construction worker and house builder, to pick his brain on my options. He informed me that it may be too expensive and impossible to replace the stair treads, all depending on how they were installed. So I had to wait, until today for him to come and check it out. Today he came by armed with a replacement tread to check out the situation. And, happy leap day to me!!!! He pulled up the broken tread to discover that the treads had been replaced at some point (in the 105 years of this house) and that it would be feasible to replaced each tread. And to sweeten the pot, it should only be between $9-10 per stair. Of course this wouldn't include sanding, painting, staining, etc. or the amazing dinner and love I will bestow upon him! All in all, a great extra day in 2012!!!! So I'll leave you with an in process picture. You can see all the various stages, scummy old wood, new tread, and of course, beautiful carpet. While it may not look like much right now, I can just imagine how beautiful it will be in the near future!!!
